To quick things off, we have VEGA Instruments SA achieving WRAS certification for water safety!

VEGA believes this milestone places the company among the first in the marketplace to have its instruments successfully undergo the rigorous WRAS material testing, which the company says reinforces its commitment to delivering the highest standards of quality and safety in the water industry.

WRAS certification ensures that materials and products in contact with drinking water meet UK water regulations, which confirms their safety and quality for both businesses and consumers. It involves thorough assessment and testing to maintain high standards. VEGA’s approved products are now listed in the WRAS directory.

Doug Anderson, MD of Vega said:

We’ve shown our MCERTS credentials on wastewater and environmental monitoring, now it’s time to show how well our devices scrub up with WRAS approval for clean water applications.

The company said the successful certification of its VEGAPULS C21/22/23 and VEGAPULS 21/31 radar level sensors, alongside the VEGAWELL 52 pressure transmitters, underscores its dedication to engineering excellence and a proactive approach in ensuring products meet all industry requirements. Customers should now benefit from having even greater confidence that VEGA instruments not only perform with precision but demonstrate compliance with regulations in the UK drinking water industry.

Ebara Corporation strengthens in the Middle East

Ebara Corporation is planning to open a new service shop for its energy company products in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and expand the capacity of the service shop currently in operation at its flagship location in Houston, Texas, USA

The Japanese company is optimizing its global service network by expanding and consolidating its bases in order to adapt to the changing business environment, including carbon neutrality and the energy transition.

Ebara has identified the Middle East and Asia as a growth region in the energy sector, and expects demand for service and support (S&S) for compressors, turbines, and custom pumps to increase further in the future. In addition to the service shop for custom pumps already in operation in Saudi Arabia and the service shop for compressors and turbines that started operating in 2023, the new shop in Abu Dhabi will enable Ebara to respond to the growing demand for service. The new facility will open in the fourth quarter of FY2025.

In order to provide more advanced and prompt services for rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors and turbines, Ebara has decided to expand the capacity of its existing service store in Houston, Texas from 7,000 sq m to approximately 9,300 sq m. The expansion is scheduled for completion in June 2025.

In response to customers moving their operating bases and markets to other regions, Ebara has also consolidated its service stores in Burlington, Canada and Guatemala. Ebara says this will allow the company to optimize its service network and establish a structure to efficiently serve customers, while improving the profitability of the S&S business.

Cflow secures contract from Salmon Evolution for Norwegian project!

The Cflow fish handling technology will ensure optimal animal welfare and sustainable production of Atlantic salmon.

Cflow will manufacture all equipment, including piping, valves and pumps, at its facility in Langevåg, outside Ålesund in Norway, and manage commissioning at Salmon Evolution’s Indre Harøy facility. Design and engineering work has already started, while equipment deliveries will begin in early 2025 and continue well into 2026.

Gunnar Hoff, CMO at Cflow said:

Salmon Evolution’s second phase build-out represents the next exciting chapter in Cflow’s land-based future, we have worked hard to prepare next generation’s fish welfare for land-based aquaculture. Salmon Evolution can already demonstrate highly impressive biological results, but our joint ambition is to further improve both animal welfare and their commercial results. We have turned every stone and employed our best biologists and engineers to develop a very gentle fish handling system.

On completion of the second phase build-out, Salmon Evolution will increase its production capacity with a further 10,100 tonnes HOG, to a total planned production volume of 18,000 tonnes annually.

General Pump Company merges with Water Well Solutions!

Founded in 2000 by a team of water well industry professionals, WWS has brought a technology and engineering-driven approach to well and pump maintenance for utilities and industrial water users throughout the greater Midwest region. The transaction will help both companies scale through the sharing of knowledge, resources, ideas, and talent to better deliver value to their long-term customers. Both companies will continue to operate under their existing names, brands, and locations.

For nearly a quarter of a century, Water Well Solutions has stood by utilities, cities, and manufacturers to keep their water flowing, from the start we’ve proudly innovated and brought new ideas and technologies to the industry, and we’re excited to continue the tradition of innovation with General Pump Company. Both companies share the same ethos of long-term, data-driven service with the best equipment and dedicated, experienced field technicians in the industry.

said Michael Judkins, WWS.

The partnership was led by Sylmar Group, a water-focused company, making multi-decade investments in leading water service and technology businesses, whose backing will support GPC’s  and WWS’s continued expansion nationwide.

Both General Pump Company and Water Well Solutions are also announcing key additions to their leadership teams. Earlier this summer, GPC welcomed Tim Oman as its new president, succeeding long-time president and director of Engineering Mike Bodart, who will continue on as the director of Engineering. Oman brings a wealth of experience to GPC from his leadership roles at Layne. Water Well Solutions has hired Brian Snelten as its new general manager. Snelten is a former president of the National Groundwater Association and former Area Manager of Layne’s Aurora, Illinois office.

Thames Water sewage treatment works increases capacity!

The STW, which can currently treat up to 269 litres of wastewater per second, will almost double its capacity to 484 litres per second. This includes a new 9000 square metre HIRB, a natural filtration system that provides a final treatment of water prior to it being returned to the environment.

The HIRB will treat an extra 114 litres of waste per second, as part of the treatment process. Increasing this capacity will greatly reduce the risk of storm overflows during periods of heavy rainfall and return a better quality of effluent to the river.

Having started the upgrade in Summer 2023, work should be completed in Spring 2025. This comes as part of Thames Water’s commitment to updating infrastructure and playing its part to contribute to improving the health of rivers and waterways.

Paul Parfrey, Project Manager at Thames Water said,

We are pleased to be working towards improving our Cirencester Sewage Treatment Works for residents and businesses in the area. Our new 9000 square metre HIRB will treat an extra 114 litres of waste per second, to help increase capacity of the site. As custodians of this important infrastructure we need to ensure our sites are resilient to the pressures of climate change and population growth so we can continue to provide reliable services to our customers. This upgrade to our network will help protect customers and the health of the rivers and waterways.

The upgrade of Cirencester STW comes as part of Thames Water’s plans to improve 250 of their wastewater sites including in the Cotswolds, such as Fairford, Cricklade and Bourton-on-the-Water.

Manchester City Football Club saves 50mn liters of water in one season!

Manchester City Football Club (MCFC) has announced a reduction in water consumption by 50 million litres in the 23/24 season, with the club attributing a substantial share of this success down to the water technology solutions and technical advice provided by Xylem.

Central to achieving this reduction was an improved attenuation tank that enables the safe reuse of rainwater for sustainable pitch irrigation at the club’s training facility - City Football Academy (CFA).

Delivered in collaboration with Xylem, the attenuation tank upgrade at CFA has reduced the club’s reliance on potable water by as much as one million litres per day, representing a 70% decrease compared to the original system.

Supplementary to the attenuation tank, the club now draws non-potable water from an underground borehole. By implementing a new energy-efficient borehole pumping solution, the club has achieved a 25% reduction in energy usage – a saving of approximately 14 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

And the work between Xylem and City Football Group (CFG) will continue to go from strength to strength, with Manchester City actively consulting its water technology partner to identify further solutions to improve water efficiency.

Austin Alexander, Vice President of Sustainability and Social Impact at Xylem, said:

Our partnership with City Football Group demonstrates what can be achieved through innovative thinking and partnership. It highlights that sustainable water stewardship goes beyond simply reducing consumption; it’s about raising awareness and inspiring action. By saving water on the pitch and educating millions of football fans globally, we can take meaningful steps toward a more water-secure world.
