As part of this bi-weekly newsletter, we'll bring you the latest industry news, technology innovations and appointments from across the industry.

To quick things off, we are just a week away from what will be the biggest WWEM exhibition ever!

This will be WWEM’s biggest event yet in the show’s history, with more exhibitors and a more expansive conference programme that ever before. It promises to be an unparalleled opportunity to foster new connections, strengthen existing partnerships and get a glimpse into the future of the water industry.

Starting it's inception in 2005, WWEM has continually evolved over two decades into a leading event in the UK, with over 200 of the industry’s top suppliers gathered in one place. Beyond the exhibition floor, the conference schedule is packed with over 100 hours of free technical workshops and presentations, delivered by regulators, accreditation bodies, standards committees, researchers, scientists and technicians from across industry, including many of the major water companies.

And this year, you have the opportunity to hear from our Managing Director, Lyle King, who will be presenting at the event on Thursday 10th October. The presentation will explore the current talent landscape and how we can create and implement a more cohesive talent strategy.

The team at Influx Search will also be attending to be sure to get in touch to meet up for a coffee!

Wilo Group opens it Networking building at Wilopark!

The new 5,000 sq m market partner meeting centre at Wilopark will soon hold a water summit, an AI and sustainability conference, and a procurement conference.

The Networking Cube will be a place to exchange knowledge, forge and deepen partnerships, and thus make a sustainable difference

said Oliver Hermes, president & CEO of the Wilo Group.

The Networking Cube has a 191-sq-m LED wall made up of over 50 million pixels, which surrounds the atrium on the ground floor of the building on three sides. Throughout the complex, visitors have access to numerous state-of-the-art meeting rooms and interaction areas. This also includes the White Room on the roof, which is surrounded by a green roof terrace. The green roof merges with the south façade of the Networking Cube, which is designed as a vertical garden. The cloakroom in the basement is a symbolic reminder of the roots of the Wilo Group, which was founded in 1872: visitors store their jackets in containers that are lowered from the ceiling, resembling those found in pithead baths in coal mines.

The opening of the Networking Cube marks the completion of the penultimate building phase of the Wilopark construction project. The Health Cube is scheduled to open in 2026.

Once construction work is complete, the approximately 200,000 sq m Wilopark will comprise five main buildings: the Smart Factory, the Pioneer Cube administration building, the Innovation Cube research and development centre, the Networking Cube, and the Health Cube. Wilo has invested over €400 million in the development of the Wilopark site.

Water.org at the heart of global climate change

The Mayor of London and Co-Chair of C40 Cities Sadiq Khan committed to putting water at the heart of the global climate crisis agenda as he joined actor and clean water advocate Matt Damon and his co-founder Gary White of Water.org at The Climate Pledge Summit to address global leaders in New York.

Mayor Khan joined Matt Damon and Gary White at The Climate Pledge Summit last week, to discuss how to build resilient water systems in the face of a changing climate. They talked about how the public, private, and non-profit sectors can partner to expand water access and improve water quality even as floods and droughts become more frequent and severe.

The Climate Pledge Summit brings together leaders from across the globe to share progress, learn from one another, participate in deep-dive discussions, and drive powerful collaboration for climate action. C40 already works closely with The Climate Pledge, co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism.

By 2050, more than 7.4 million people in C40 cities will be at risk from flooding, potentially costing USD$136 billion in GDP annually over the next 30 years.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of the world could face water shortages by next year, affecting 650 million urban residents by 2050. This could cost C40 cities USD$111 billion annually.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said:

More than half of the world’s population live in urban areas which are facing more frequent climate-induced water issues, including drought, flooding, sea-level rise, storms and water pollution. I’m pleased to join Matt Damon and Gary White to discuss how C40 Cities and Water.org are working to address these problems which will only get worse as the climate crisis intensifies and disproportionately affect vulnerable communities

Last week Mayor Khan visited the Billion Oyster Project to see first-hand the return of oysters to the Hudson, following on from his bold pledge to clean up London’s rivers over the next 10 years

$3.4M investment in efficient pumps!

Illinois American Water is investing US$3.4 million in the infrastructure of its water treatment plant in the Pontiac District of Illinois, USA with pump replacements and a new backwash storage lagoon.

Four existing high-service pumps that have reached the end of their useful life will be replaced with three new pumps that are appropriately sized to efficiently serve the Pontiac water supply system. The new pumps will allow the water treatment plant to provide a wide variety of flow rates to match the needs of the community.

Corey Robinson, Illinois American Water Superintendent of Pontiac Operations, said:

The new pumps will operate more efficiently than the existing pumps and reduce the amount of maintenance needed to operate the pumps

Construction has already started and is expected to be complete by the end of 2024 or early 2025. The approximate project cost is US$1.7 million.

The Backwash Lagoon Improvements project will construct an additional backwash storage lagoon to allow for improved operations of the water filters and allow for more efficient removal of material from the lagoons during maintenance operations. The project is currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in late 2024 with completion anticipated for the first quarter of 2025. The project cost is also an estimated US$1.7 million.

Metso continues their expansion!

Metso is investing €6 million (C$8 million) in a new service center in Prince George, British Columbia.

British Columbia is one of the emerging mining regions in Canada and the new facility will support the growing needs of customers, primarily operating in copper and gold segments.

The center will service a wide range of mining equipment from pit to port, including filters, flotation cells, grinding mills, crushers, screens, pumps, and apron feeders.

The new service center enhances our ability to deliver OEM-certified on-site inspections, turnkey service solutions, and off-site repairs

said Justin Ayotte, Vice President, Sales and Service, Canada, Metso. He further added:

Strategically located near a key mining region, it enables faster repair times, shorter turnaround, and sustainability benefits by reducing transportation distances. We will also offer comprehensive field service support to better serve our customers

Metso plans to begin construction after the land acquisition is finalized, with completion expected in the second half of 2025.

Is data management the key to large-scale river monitoring?

The Environment Act 2021 is driving major investment in water quality monitoring technology. As thousands of sensors are deployed, data management and visualisation must be key to strategies, writes James Chapman, environmental solutions business development manager at Xylem, ahead of the Water, Wastewater & Environmental Monitoring conference on 9-10 October 2024.

Implementation of the Environment Act 21 will provide a database of water quality information on a scale that England has never had before. Part 5 Section 82 of the Act states utilities must continuously monitor water quality upstream and downstream of the majority of storm overflow and sewage treatment works, which discharge into a watercourse.

The Act requires water companies to monitor for pH and temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and ammonia at least every 15 minutes during storm overflows, and every hour at other times, with data published in near real-time. While this data will not solve the problem of pollution, it will allow utilities to assess the environmental impacts of overflows, pinpoint where the problems are and plan targeted improvement programmes, while also providing the public with reliable water quality information.

To meet the Act’s requirements, approximately 40,000 new multi-parameter sondes are expected to be deployed in rivers the length and breadth of the country, along with associated infrastructure, such as kiosks and deployment tubes. Key deadlines include the monitoring of all high priority sites, such as chalk streams and sites of special scientific interest, by 2030, with total rollout to be completed by 2035.
